Cannabis is a schedule 1 controlled substance.  However, in 1978, the federal government was forced to allow patients’ access to medical cannabis after a "medical necessity" defense was recognized by the Supreme Court (U.S. v. Randall 1976). In 1978, the government began producing medical cannabis at the University of Mississippi for AIDS and glaucoma treatment. “Grand fathered” patients still receive federal cannabis supplies. 

 

 

The demand for medical cannabis dispensaries has continued to grow at the speed of light as more states adopt medical cannabis programs that permit the use of cannabis products for the treatment of chronically and terminally ill patients.  As of December of 2016, Colorado had over 1,000 dispensaries and 2,900 marijuana business licenses in the state, yet Los Angeles alone has more dispensaries than the states of Colorado and Washington combined. These numbers are growing rapidly as more states legalize medical cannabis. The necessity is undeniable.
